Thickened, yellow or crumbly toenails are common. Many people put up with them for years, or try over-the-counter paints without lasting change. A fungal nail infection (onychomycosis) is one possible cause — but not the only one. Trauma, psoriasis, and other nail conditions can look similar.

At Healthpoint Podiatry in Liverpool, our podiatrists assess the nail and surrounding skin, explain what they see, and discuss practical treatment options suited to you. We do not promise a cure or a guaranteed result. Fungal nails often need patience and follow-up.

What fungal nails can look like

You might notice one or more of the following:

  • Yellow, white or brown discolouration
  • Thickening or crumbling of the nail plate
  • Nail lifting away from the nail bed
  • Debris under the free edge of the nail
  • An unpleasant smell from the affected toe
  • Spread from one nail to others over time

If the skin between the toes is itchy, peeling or cracked, that can sit alongside a nail problem and is worth mentioning at your visit.

When to see a podiatrist

Book an assessment if:

  • Home treatments have not helped after a reasonable trial
  • The nail is painful, catching on socks, or making shoes uncomfortable
  • Several nails are involved
  • You have diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced feeling in your feet
  • You are unsure whether the change is fungal or something else

People with diabetes or circulation problems should not ignore nail and skin changes. Early review helps reduce the chance of secondary problems.

How we approach fungal nail care

Your first visit is a New Patient (Initial Consultation) — 45 minutes, from $99. A $50 deposit is taken when you book online. That deposit comes off the consultation fee. It is non-refundable if you cancel or reschedule within 24 hours of the appointment.

At the appointment, the podiatrist will typically:

  1. Take a history of the nail changes, footwear, sport, and any past treatments
  2. Examine the nails and skin of both feet
  3. Discuss likely causes and what treatment pathways are realistic for your case
  4. Outline next steps — which may include nail reduction (thinning/debridement), topical advice, discussion of oral medication pathways via your GP where appropriate, or further investigation if the picture is unclear

Treatment plans vary. Some people need regular nail care to keep the nail comfortable while addressing the infection. Others need a different approach entirely if the problem is not fungal. Your podiatrist will explain the options in plain language before anything proceeds.

FAQ

Can a podiatrist treat fungal nails?
Yes. Podiatrists assess nail changes, reduce thickened nails, and discuss treatment options. Some pathways (for example oral antifungal medication) involve your GP. We will explain what sits with podiatry care and what needs another practitioner.

How long does fungal nail treatment take?
It varies. Toenails grow slowly, so visible improvement can take months. We will give a realistic timeframe for your situation — not a guaranteed end date.

Do I need a referral?
You do not need a referral for a private podiatry appointment. If you have a GP care plan or other paperwork, bring it to the visit so reception can note it. Fee and rebate details beyond the advertised consult price are confirmed at the clinic.

What should I bring?
Comfortable shoes you wear most days, a list of current medicines, and any recent nail or skin reports if you have them.
