An ingrown nail is a common toe problem where the toenail, instead of growing in the right direction, grows into the toe. This condition is highly painful for the sufferer and may create hindrance and pain in daily activities.
There are many causes behind ingrown toenails which are:
Other than these cause, ingrown nails are also very common in athletes as it requires constant use of feet for kicking or exerting pressure.
In most cases, our podiatrist carries out treatment to cure the condition. It involves partial removal of the nail. Your podiatrist may numb the area around your toe with the help of a local pain injection and remove it part of the nail as necessary. The process can be slightly painful in the beginning, but it is essential to treat it to get rid of any further complications.
During the surgical treatment, your podiatrist will more likely cut away the edges around your toenails completely.
You should see a podiatrist immediately if you experience the following symptoms:
There are a few different options available to fix this painful issue, three are listed below.
Your doctor may also advise on some treatment at home to try to get rid of the condition first. However, we strictly advise you to visit a podiatrist if you are in too much pain or suspect infection in your toe.
Treatment For Minor Toe Nail Issue By Lifting The Nail:
In the early stages of an ingrowing nail where there maybe redness and pain but no pus, we have the option of carefully lifting the ingrowing nail edge and place cotton, dental floss or a splint under it, separating the nail from the overlying skin which helps the nail grow above the skin edge.
Treatment For Severe Nail Condition By Partially Removing The Nail:
When the nail ingrowing is more severe, for example redness, pain as well as pus, we may trim or remove the ingrown portion of that nail. If necessary we may your doctor may temporarily numb your toe with an anesthetic.
Treatment For Problematic Nails By Removing The Nail And Tissue:
If the problem is left untreated or is keeps reocurring on the same toe, your doctor may suggest removing a portion of the nail along with the underlying nail bed or tissue, preventing that part of your nail from growing back.

Fantastic service privider. I saw 3 doctors and was on 4 different antibiotics, I was advised to take anti fungus medication for 12months, but after weeks of pain I thought I'll see one more doctor, just to get another opinion. Dr Ibrahim advised to remove my toenail immediately, so we did the same day. Since than, the infection and pain went away! Thank you for your advice and support!
